D.C.M. London Gazette 1 January 1919, citation published 3 September 1919.
‘As a platoon commander he has shown conspicuous courage and good leadership, and instilled the best spirit into the men under him. His services are as valuable in training as they are under the fire of the enemy.’

Ernest A. Scarborough, from Eastbourne, Sussex, attested into the South Wales Borderers and served during the Great War with the 2nd Battalion, initially at Tientsin, China, landing at Lao Shan Bay on 23 September 1914 for operations against the German territory of Tsingtao. Embarking for Hong Kong in December, he retuned home the following month before further service at Gallipoli, when he landed at Cape Helles on 25 April 1915. Moving to Egypt in January 1916, and Suez two months later, he landed in Marseilles, France on 15 March 1916, before further service on the Western Front with the 5th Battalion.
