D.C.M. London Gazette 17 April 1918.
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the last nine months he has shown great gallantry under fire, and his conduct at all times has been of a very high order, influencing his men to a very great degree. On the occasion of an attack he performed most valuable work, keeping complete control of the men, and preparing later to meet the counter attack.’
Frederick Hillier, from Newport, Monmouthshire, attested into the South Wales Borderers and served during the Great War with the 2nd Battalion, initially at Tientsin, China, and landed at Lao Shan Bay on 23 September 1914 for operations against the German territory of Tsingtao. Embarking for Hong Kong in December, he retuned home the following month before further service at Gallipoli, when he landed at Cape Helles on 25 April 1915. Moving to Egypt in January 1916, and Suez two months later, he landed in Marseilles, France on 15 March 1916, before further service on the Western Front and attachment to the Army School. Advanced Company Sergeant Major, he was discharged on 28 March 1919.
