British Iron Age, DUROTRIGES, Uninscribed issues, silver Stater, Spread Tail type, devolved head of Apollo, comprising wreath, cloak and crescents, rev. disjointed horse left, rectangular head, body of crescents, four vertical legs, three diverging lines for tail and three diverging lines before horse, pellets above, coffee bean above tail, large pellet below, zigzag and pellet design in exergue, 3.64g/9h (ABC 2160 var.; BMC 2662, 2690 var.; VA 1238-1 var.; S –). This coin is an interesting variety of the Spread Tail type, wherein the diverging lines appear on both the tail-end and front of the horse. Could this potentially be derived from the Turf Cutter type, where we see four parallel lines forming the head? Or perhaps, just a stylistic difference.
