Thomas Hardiman was born in the Parish of St Thomas’, Birmingham, and enlisted for 39th Brigade at Walsall on 26 December 1879, aged 18, a brass founder by trade. He served with the 1st Gordon Highlanders in Egypt 1882, in the Eastern Soudan 1884, and in the Nile Expedition 1884-85. He was discharged at Aberdeen on 25 September 1891.
