Laurence Walsh was born at Shanbally, County Cork, on 15 April 1881, and joined the Royal Navy on 22 November 1897. He received his L.S. & G.C. medal in July 1914 and served aboard H.M.S. Talbot from July 1914 to November 1918. He was shore pensioned as Chief Petty Officer in April 1921.
