Alexander George Dennison, the eldest son of George and Annie, was a member of the Rhodesian Pioneer Column in 1890, serving as a lieutenant under Major Frank Johnson. This column was formed at the behest of Rhodes for the purpose of implementing the Rhodes-Rudd mining concession granted by Lobengula. Alex was among those who returned to South Africa after the operation was accomplished and the corps disbanded, many remaining in the territory. In 1896 he married Dora Pemberton Bradfield and settled in Vryburg where he ran a store. He served in the Anglo-Boer War as a lieutenant (sic) in Hannay's Scouts and was wounded in action on 18 September 1901, in the Vryburg district. He died of his injuries while in the ambulance-wagon in the field.

Hannay's Scouts were amalgamated into the Western Light Horse in April 1902.
