Thomas Bale served in E Battery B Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery, at the battle of Maiwand. His record of service notes that his original medical documents were lost in the battle. Two men of this battery won the Victoria Cross on 27 July 1880 and the battery was subsequently awarded the Honour Title “Maiwand”.
