Frederick Jayne was born in Gravesend, Kent. By occupation a signalman, he attested for the Grenadier Guards in 1894, aged 24 years. He was promoted Corporal in 1896, Serjeant in 1900, Colour Serjeant in 1904 and C.S.M. in 1915. Jayne served in Gibraltar between July 1898 and October 1899 and in South Africa between March 1900 and October 1902 - for the latter he was awarded the Queen’s medal with three clasps and the King’s medal with two. He was on home service between 1902 and 1918 when he was discharged as being surplus to military requirements and was awarded a pension. Awarded the Long Service medal in 1917. Sold with copied service papers.
