William Edward Kimmings was born at Rattery, near Ashburton, Devon in September 1855 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in June 1870. He subsequently witnessed active service aboard H.M.S. Agincourt in the Egypt operations of 1882, and again in the Dryad in the Suakin operations of 1884, when he was landed with the Naval Brigade and fought at the Battles of El-Teb and Tamaai (14 clasps issued to this ship). Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in July 1885, Kimmings was pensioned ashore as a Gunner’s Mate in October 1891, as a result of the loss of his right thumb.
