George Charles Bingham, Earl of Lucan succeeded as third earl in 1839, and as commander of the cavalry in the Crimea fought at the Alma, Balaklava and Inkerman. He is perhaps most famous for ordering the charge of the Light Brigade, after misinterpreting Lord Raglan’s orders delivered to him by an impetuous young staff officer, Captain Lewis Nolan. He became a field-marshall in 1887 and died the following year, 1888.
