D.C.M., London Gazette, 27 September, 1901. George William Walker was severely wounded in both legs at Kheis Drift on 28 May 1900. He was one of the gallant party with Major Orr-Ewing who rushed out to the rescue of Corporal Baxter at the beginning of what was to become the regiment’s saddest episode of the war. His wounds were so severe that he lost his right leg as a result and was discharged medically unfit having been promoted Lance Sergeant and awarded the D.C.M.
