Gervais Francis Newport Tinley was born on 4 November 1857, and was first commissioned as an unattached Sub-Lieutenant on 10 September 1875. In August 1876 he was posted to the 83rd Regiment, and the following month promoted to Lieutenant in the Indian Army. He joined the 1st Bombay Lancers in 1881 and saw his first action in the Zhob Valley expedition of 1884, being present at the affair of Daulatzai. He subsequently saw action in Burma throughout several campaigns between 1885 and 1889, during which period he was wounded, had his horse shot from under him and was mentioned in despatches.

Tinley had been promoted to Captain in 1887, and next saw action as a Major in the Sudan campaign of 1896, in the Dongola expedition (two medals). He was promoted Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel in 1898 and confirmed in that rank in September 1902, in which year he commanded the Indian Contingent (Cavalry) at the coronation of Edward VII. He commanded the 1st Bombay Lancers from 1898 to 1906, and was promoted to Colonel in September 1905. He subsequently served as Assistant Adjutant-General, India, and on the Army Staff 1914-16, receiving both the C.B. and C.M.G. for his services. He was the author of several monographs on various Indian units, including one of the Central India Horse. Sold with three old copy photographs of the recipient in uniform.
