Edward Henry Smith was born in Old Hall Green, Hertfordshire and enlisted at Hertford. Serving with the 13th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, he was killed in action on 31 July 1917. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
