Three: Major-General H. W. Duperier, Royal Engineers

Henry William Duperier was born on 9 September 1851, the son of Major Charles Duperier, 26th and 80th Regiment. Educated privatelly and at the R.M.A. Woolwich, he was gazetted into the Royal Engineers on 4 January 1871. After two years at Chatham and then Devonport he proceeded to service in India in 1874. After working with the Irrigation Department for four years he then served in the Afghan War of 1878-80 as a Field Engineer. In 1881 he married Ethel, daughter of Colonel A. M. Lang, C.B., R.E., together they were to have two daughters. He was advanced to Captain in 1883 and Major in 1889. In 1896 he was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel and became Deputy Director-General of Military Works for four years at Simla and was then appointed Chief Engineer Bengal and then Chief Engineer Punjab. In 1903 he was appointed Director-General of Military Works with the rank of Major-General. He retired in 1908 on Indian Pension. In 1919 he was mentioned for his valuable service rendered during the Great War on the Selection Board of the Inns of Court and Artist’s Rifles Officer Training Courses. Major-General Duperier died on 10 October 1940.
