The King’s Own Light Infantry (Tower Hamlets ) Militia, a fine and rare Captain’s uniform for the period 1869-1878, comprising a blue cloth 1869 pattern full dress shako, scarlet tunic, scarlet shell jacket, white leather waist belt complete with clasp and scarlet net sash. The shako trimmed with silver lace and bearing the silver plated 1855 star pattern plate, central strung bugle horn on a domed ground with title in surround ‘The King’s Own Light Infantry’; complete with chin chain and side rosettes but lacking plume and holder; leather sweat band present but lacking silk lining, the plate is original to the shako. The single breasted 1868 pattern tunic with eight large plated buttons to the front and two to the reverse, silver bullion shoulder cords with small unit buttons, one detached but present; correct rank badges to the collar and lace to the cuff; the shell jacket bears eight small unit buttons to the front, two on each cuff and similar buttons retain the silver lace ‘crow’s-foot’ shoulder cords; the waist belt plate of 1855 pattern in gilt and silver features central crowned bugle horn and unit title, matching bench marks by ‘J&Co’; this and the crimson sash accompanied by the metal carrying tin (Flight 72 High Street Winchester); additional items include an undress waist belt (no plate), two sash ends and a length of gold and crimson lace. The shako in good sound condition with slight surface mothing to the crown and some crazing to the peak, the tunic with various small moth holes, mainly to the rear and the white edging, shell jacket has been crudely relined and has moth nips to the white edging and elsewhere, waist belt plate in excellent condition but one sword sling missing from the belt, sash with some minor ‘pulls’. £600-800
