John W. Merritt was born in and enlisted at Clough Jordan, Co. Tipperary. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment, he was awarded the Military Medal (London Gazette 14 May 1919). Private Merritt was killed in action at Cambrai on 8 October 1918, aged 26 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial. He was the son of James and Mary Ann Merritt of Stoneyacre, Clough Jordan.
