John Albert Anderson was born on 24 June 1844. He qualified as a M.D. at the R.U.I. in 1866 and was appointed a Staff Assistant Surgeon in October 1867. Serving with the 18th Hussars in March 1868, he was promoted to Surgeon in March 1873. After service in South Africa during 1879 he was promoted to Surgeon-Major on 1 October 1879. Anderson was placed on Retired Pay with the honorary rank of Brigade Surgeon on 30 November 1887 and later became Surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel. Was employed when on the Retired List at Shorncliffe. Sold with original visiting card, ‘Surgeon Major J. A. Anderson, A.M.D., Army & Navy Club’.
