George Mair, M.A., M.D., was appointed Surgeon R.N. on 4 August 1860, becoming Staff Surgeon in July 1873, and Fleet Surgeon in September 1881. He was Assistant Surgeon of the Simoom, hospital ship, at the capture of the Taku Forts, in the China war, 1860; in medical charge of the Vulcan’s naval brigade, with siege guns at the capture of Kahding in October 1862 (China Medal). He was Fleet Surgeon of the Slutan at the bombardment of Alexandria, 11th July 1882, and during the Egyptian War (Egyptian Medal and Clasp, Khedive’s Bronze Star).
