Roland Hamilton was born on 23 November 1886. commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in December 1905, he won the Haynes Medal in 1907. Promoted to Lieutenant in August 1908 and Captain in October 1914; he held the rank of Acting Major, November 1918-July 1919 and Acting major in the Indian Army, August-December 1919. During the Great War he served with the Egypt Expeditionary Force, March-October 1916 and in Mesopotamia, December 1917-October 1918. Post-war, he served in Waziristan 1921-24, for which he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 30 May 1924), and in Kurdistan, 1923. He was later awarded the O.B.E. Sold with some copied research.
