Daniel W. North, a native of Tottenham, London, who had been employed as an engineer by the G.P.O. prior to his enlistment in the Royal Flying Corps in December 1915, was posted to No. 12 Balloon Section in France in May 1916. As verified by his service record, however, he was admitted to hospital in Boulogne at the end of the year, suffering from shell shock, and was eventually evacuated home to No. 2 Western General Hospital in Chester in February 1917. Re-mustered as an Air Mechanic 1st Class in the newly established Royal Air Force in April 1918, he was transferred to the R.A.F. Reserve in May 1919.
