Leonard Arthur Shell, who was born at King’s Norton, Warwickshire in April 1893, served as a driver for the British Ambulance Committee Service (de Sante Militaire) from June 1915 to July 1917, in which latter month he transferred to the Royal Naval Air Service. He subsequently served in France from December 1917 to January 1919, and was employed in No. 14 Squadron at the time of the formation of the Royal Air Force in April 1918.
