INDIAN MUTINY 1857-58, 1 clasp, Relief of Lucknow (Alexr. Smith, 93rd Highlanders) toned, extremely fine
Killed in action at the attack on the Shah Nujjeef on 16 November, 1857. The 93rd, who earlier that day had earned everlasting glory in the attack on the Secunder Bagh, were again thrown into a desperte attack. Sir Colin Cambell, collecting the 93rd around him said to them “I had no intention of employing you again today, but the Shah Nujjeef must be taken. The artillery cannot drive the enemy out, so you must with the bayonet.” And so they did, with their old chief leading them on, winning further glories that earned for the Highlanders no less than six Victoria Crosses for their gallantry on that day.
