Lieutenant Arthur Ernest Alphonsus Cowan was born in August, 1880, and educated at Clifton College. He entered the Antrim Artillery in April, 1900, being promoted Lieutenant the following September, and while belonging to it, was specially selected for service in South Aftica in 1901. He was granted a commission in the 2nd Dragoon Guards in October, 1901, and served with them until his death, of enteria, at Elandsfonrein on 11th April, 1902.
