George Ponsonby O’Callaghan, 2nd Viscount Lismore (1815-98), served as an officer in the 17th Lancers. He was appointed high sheriff of co Tipperary in 1853 and held the office of Lord Lieutenant of the county from 1857 to 1885. He acceded to the peerage on 30 May 1857; the title became extinct upon his death, which occured at Folkestone, Kent, on 29 October 1898
