J. Smith enlisted as a Band Boy in the Prince of Wales’s Volunteer on 11 October 1923, seving in that regiment for over 11 years. He transferred to the Royal Marines Plymouth Divisional Band on 3 August 1935, as a Musician with the number PLY22805. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal on 11 August 1941, probably completed time for pension in 1947, but almost immediately re-enlisted, with a new number - PLYX5443. In 1950 the Divisional Bands were amalgamated with the R.N. School of Music and he therefore got another new number, this time RMBX2831. He was awarded a Bar to his L.S. & G.C. medal on 31 August 1956. Musician Smith died on 20 April 1974.
