Edith Odlum, a housemaid at Buckingham Palace, was awarded her Medal in November 1943 and retired in the following month. Most likely, therefore, she was present on the occasion when the Palace was badly damaged by bombs on 13 September 1940, an incident which famously prompted H.M. the Queen to observe, “I am glad we were bombed. It makes me feel I can look the East End in the face.”
