Norman Francis Boag was born on 13 August 1897 in Leeston, Canterbury, New Zealand. He graduated as a M.B., Ch.B. at the University of Otago in 1920. Boag enlisted in the Otago University Medical Company in 1914. He eventually became a Lieutenant-Colonel, having been commissioned in 1918. In the Second World War he embarked for Egypt in Spring 1940 and was the Commanding Officer of No. 1 Convalescent Depot, March-December 1940. He returned to New Zealand in early 1941. In addition to the above, awarded by General Orders 349/350 of October 1930, he was awarded the Serving Brother of the Order of St. John; 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; War and New Zealand Service Medals, and Efficiency Decoration for New Zealand.
