Richard Henry Sainsbury was born in Cardiff on 20 September 1869. A Shipwright by trade, he entered the Royal Navy as a Shipwright on 23 March 1891. He was advanced to Leading Shipwright when on Alexandra in March 1894, Carpenter’s Mate when based at Vernon in August 1898; Chief Carpenter’s Mate at Victory II in August 1912 and Chief Shipwright in December 1912 when again at Vernon. Sainsbury served on the Beagle, May 1901-August 1903, and was one of 110 men of the ship entitled to the Queen’s South Africa Medal without clasp. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal when serving on the battleship Centurion, August 1905-May 1906. He was demobilized on 19 August 1916 after serving on the armed boarding steamer Lunka, December 1915-August 1916.
