Killed in action at Colenso on 15 December 1899, when the guns of the 14th and 66th Batteries were abandoned. In the attempts to recover them which were only partly successful, five Victoria Crosses were awarded, including a posthumous award to Lieutenant F. J. Roberts, son of the Commander-in-Chief, Lord Roberts, V.C.
