John Kelly was born in Kensington, London in January 1858 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in April 1874. An Able Seaman by the time of his service in H.M.S. Penelope (June 1882 to January 1883), he was discharged ashore at Sydney ‘time expired’ in December 1885; sold with a file of research, including copied service record.
