George Lee was born in Woking, Surrey. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Royal West Surrey Regiment at Kingston-on-Thames on 27 October 1894, aged 18 years, 8 months. With the regiment he served in India, November 1896-March 1902 and in South Africa, March-September 1902. Transferred to the Army Reserve in September 1902, he was discharged having completed his period of service in October 1906. During the Great War he served in the Army Service Corps. With copied service papers, m.i.c. and roll extracts.
