18th Century Tokens, Lancashire, Manchester, John Fielding, Halfpenny, 1793, Grocers’ arms, rev. blank-filed and countermarked with a deeply incuse heraldic representation, crest, a demi-lion holding a bell, over a shield containing a bell, edge plain, 7.73g/6h (DH 132 for obv.). Good fine, extremely rare and unusual, worthy of further research £100-150
The heraldic representation is not, as far as can be ascertained, connected with the Fielding family or with Manchester. As a result of the blank filing the piece has lost about a gram in weight (cf. DNW 63, 1315)
