Joseph O’Donnell was born in Athlone, Ireland on 9 January 1870. Serving as a Warrant Officer in the Canadian Militia, he attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Winnipeg on 2 February 1915, declaring in his papers that he had served 22 years, 210 days in the Hampshire Regiment. He was posted to the 27th Canadian Infantry and ended the war as a Warrant Officer 2nd Class. With copied Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force attestation papers and with a photocopied photograph of Warrant Officer O’Donnell as the Bandmaster of the 27th Battalion.
