Fusilier Cooney was wounded on 6 October 1951, in the bitter fighting for Point 217 during Operation Commando (3-12 October 1951). He was serving in ‘Z’ Company (11 & 12 platoons) which suffered casualties of 50% during the four days fighting, including both platoon commanders and both platoon sergeants. The Regiment received the Battle Honour ‘Kowang-San’ for this action.
