Only Masters of Transports received the 1882 Medal, making them unique to each of the 105 vessels employed.

Horatio Carter Paul, who born in Winchester in October 1833, served with the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. as Midshipman, 1850-52; Fourth Officer, 1852-53; Third Officer, 1853-55; Second Officer, 1855-58 and Chief Officer (with Master’s ticket), 1858-67. After leaving the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. in 1867 he had command of a number of vessels until joining the Admiralty Transport Service in the early 1870s, in which latter capacity he commanded ‘Transport No. 1’, the S.S.
Osiris, during the Egypt operations of 1882. Paul died in Malta in April 1887; sold with an original letter signed by his son, C. H. Paul, in which he provides details of his father’s service, together with copied research, including bestowal documents for his awards, dated 14 August 1883.
