Richard W. Tooley was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk on 15 March 1897 and joined into the Royal Marines Light Infantry at Deal on 6 April 1915. During the course of the war he served on the armoured cruiser Kent, April 1916-June 1918 and the minesweeper Hamadryad, September 1918-June 1919. Discharged on 5 April 1936 on completion of his second period of engagement, he returned to active service on 25 October 1939, serving ashore in various duties including the M.N.B.D.O. and R.M. Siege Regiment. He was awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in 1930. With copied service papers.
