Jamaica, Jubilee of the Severn Street and Priory First Day Adult Schools, 1895, a copper medal by A. Watson, bust of Joseph Sturge right, rev. teacher with two students, 45mm (BHM 3492; E 1795). Extremely fine £40-60
Provenance: Bt S.H. Betts 1985.
Although the medal does not directly relate to Jamaica, Sturge spent much time there and published two books about the apprenticeship system, encouraging the early adoption of a full emancipation date. Sturge also helped found the ‘Free Villages’ (Sturge Town taking his name), which provided living quarters for freed slaves. He also founded the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society
