Winsford (Cheshire) Tribute Medal 1900-1901, silver, ‘Presented by the town of Winsford to Capt. Jas. A. Turner in recognition of his patriotism & valour in serving in the Transvaal War as an Officer on the Staff’, the inscription engraved where shown in bold, otherwise struck as usual, nearly extremely fine and extremely rare to an officer
Ref. Hibbard A27, reverse 2. Note that the engraver has had to make subtle changes to the struck inscription to allow for an Officer on the Staff. This appears to be the first recorded example awarded to an officer.
Captain (later Lieut.-Colonel James Aspinall Turner served in the South African War in 1899-1902 with the 6th battalion Lancashire Fusiliers; took part in operations in Orange River Colony and Cape Colony (Queen’s medal with 2 clasps, King’s medal with 2 clasps).
