Pair: Private W. Thomson, Volunteer Company, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, S.A. 1901 (7342 Pte., V.Co. A. & S.Highrs.) the last clasp with an unofficial rivet; Renfrew Tribute Medal 1900-1901, a superb silver medal, 50 mm, the obverse with applique veiled bust of Queen Victoria surrounded by inscription ‘South African Campaign 1900-1901’, the reverse with applique escutcheon bearing the arms of the town surrounded by inscription in two concentric lines ‘Presented by the Corporation of the Royal Burgh of Renfrew to Pte. Wm. Thomson, G Coy. 2nd V.B. A. & S. Hs. as a recognition of his services at the front.’, the first nearly very fine, the second nearly extremely fine and extremely rare (2)

Ref. Hibbard C14, a similar pair awarded to Private James Palmer in the same regiment. These two would appear to be the only known examples of this particularly striking and unusual Scottish Tribute medal.
