William Showler was born in the Parish of Wainfleet, Boston, Lincolnshire. A Farm Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Marines at Hull on 15 July 1863, aged 18 years, 6 months. Served on H.M.S. Octavia, June 1865-March 1869. He requested his discharge in July 1875. With copied service papers.
