Lieutenant S. R. Furness R.N. was an Observer in the Fleet Air Arm. Ray Sturtivant’s book Fleet Air Arm Aircraft Since 1946 recalls the following incidents that he was involved in:
‘Grumman Avenger XB446, 28 November 1957 - R.N.A.S. Culdrose. Starboard brake failed, port wheel ran into soft grass, starboard mainplane damaged. Lt. F. H. Simpkin, Lt. E. M. Bone R.C.N., Lt. S. R. Furness.
Sea Venom XG600, 10 November 1958 - Nosewheel failed to lower, landed main wheels at R.N.A.S. Halfar, Malta. Lt Cdr. W. G. B. Black. Lt. S. R. Furness.
Sea Vixen XJ586, 7 March 1961 - Last minute correction to line up in night C.C.A. (Carrier controlled approach) in poor visibility with ship yawing, landed along the axial deck, caught No. 4 wire, starboard wing hit parked Scimitars XD214 and XD330 in Fly 2. H.M.S. Victorious.’
