Richard Steward was born in Rougham, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the 32nd Brigade of Infantry at Bury St. Edmunds on 5 February 1874, aged 24 years, 4 months. Posted to the Suffolk Regiment, he served in India, October 1874-January 1878 and again, February 1886-March 1892. He served in the Hazara Campaign of 1888 and was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in October 1894. Stewart was discharged at home on 31 May 1903 and died in Woodridge, Suffolk in 1916. With copied service papers.
