Walter Start Baillie Hamiliton was born in Middlesex on 9 August 1880, the 2nd son of the barrister Sir William Alexander Hamilton, K.C.M.G., C.B. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war war in September 1914 as a member of the Lay Staff of the British Field Hospital in Belgium and the Auxiliary Hospital Unit, Antwerp. He was later commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on the General List and served with the French Red Cross. Mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 10 July 1919 (Haig, France)) and awarded the French Legion of Honour and Croix de Guerre and Belgian Order of the Crown and Croix de Guerre (foreign awards not confirmed). He relinquished his commission whilst retaining the rank of Captain in 1920. With copied birth certificate, m.i.c. and service papers. His 1914 Star awarded under Admiralty authority.
