Thomas Edward Wickenden was born in Andover on 29 December 1885 and was educated at Andover Grammar School. A Jeweller and Watchmaker by occupation, he served in the 1st Volunteer battalion Hampshire Regiment from September 1903, later serving in the 4th and 17th battalions. As Company Serjeant-Major of the 17th Battalion he was discharged to a commission on 16 June 1917 having served to that date at home. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Garrison Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, he entered France on 13 December 1917. As a Temporary Lieutenant he relinquished his commission whilst retaining his rank in 1919. With a number of copied service papers and m.i.c.
