Thomas Newling was born in Cripplegate, Middlesex. With the R.A.M.C. he saw service in the Sudan and in China and having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in April 1912, he was discharged in March 1913 having completed his second period of service. With the onset of war, Newling, then employed as an Inspector with the N.S.P.C.C., re-attested at Cardiff on 1 October 1914. He was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant in the R.A.M.C. in January 1915 and Sergeant-Major in February 1915. He was discharged to a commission on 26 May 1915. He first entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 26 July 1915.
