M.M. London Gazette 19 July, 1949.
‘On 12 May, 1949, in the Central Sector of Johore, Rfn Jasbahadur Rai was on patrol with his platoon which was tracking a large party of bandits. At about 1800 hours, the Platoon halted for the night in the jungle and Rfn Jasbahadur Rai was posted as an OP on a track which was some 60 yards from the bivouac area. Soon after taking up his position behind a tree, Rfn Jasbahadur Rai saw two bandits moving towards him. He allowed them in bad visibility to come within 10 yards and then opened up with his sten gun. He immediately killed one bandit instantly and wounded the other. The enemy main body following up then opened up a devastating fire at short range on the rifleman, who nevertheless held his ground. Four grenades were thrown at him but inspite of this the rifleman carefully controlled his fire and taking every advantage of the cover provided by the tree refused to give way and maintained a steady but sustained fire against the enemy who were unable to advance. This steadiness in action against a vastly superior enemy party enabled the Platoon Commander to gather the rest of the Platoon, move forward and attack the enemy party in flank - with the result that two more bandits were killed and several others were severely wounded. For this outstanding example of courage, this young rifleman is most deserving of an award of a Military Medal.’
