Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (1061 Cr. Sergt. J. Cook, 99th Foot) good very fine £80-100

James Cook was born in Portadown, Co. Armagh. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 99th Regiment at Glasgow on 2 August 1859, aged 18 years. With the regiment he served 5 years, six months in China and 4 years, 5 months in the Cape Province. Transferred to the Lanarck Rifle Volunteers in September 1878. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in 1878. Discharged at Devizes on 28 July 1880 having completed his second period of engagement. Employed as a Sergeant-Instructor in the 7th Lanark Rifle Volunteer Corps, he re-attested for the Scottish Rifles at Hamilton on 1 April 1887 and later served as an Acting Sergeant-Major in the Army Service Corps. With copied service papers.
