George Chapman was born in Battersea, London. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Royal Lancaster Regiment at Kingston-on-Thames on 11 January 1896, aged 21 years. Served in Malta, November 1897; Hong Kong, November 1897-January 1899; Singapore, January 1899-March 1900, and South Africa, January 1901-April 1903. Served in the 16th Battalion Mounted Infantry in South Africa. In November 1902 he was convicted by Court Martial of breaking out of barracks and resisting an escort for which he was sentenced to 28 days imprisonment. Transferred to the Army Reserve in April 1903 and discharged on 10 January 1912.
