Arthur William Wells was born in London on 29 October 1920 and educated at King’s Langley Priory and Beckenham County Schools. He enlisted in the R.E. (T.A.) on 9 March 1939, serving with 58 A.A. Battalion, later 58 Search Light Regiment R.A. Received an Emergency Commission of 2nd Lieutenant on 12 April 1941 and was advanced to War Substantive Lieutenant in October 1942. Served in N.W. Europe with the 174th H.A.A. Regiment from 30 August 1944 to 22 July 1945. Was mentioned in despatches as a Lieutenant in the R.A. ‘in recognition of gallant and distinguished service in North-West Europe. He then served in India with the 6th Indian H.A.A. Regiment, September 1945-April 1946, after which he was released from service. Awarded the Efficiency Medal by London Gazette of 1 April 1949. In the late 1940’s/early 1950’s he was living at 187 Langley Way, West Wickham, Kent. Employed as a Civil Servant in the Property Services Agency. He died at St. Austell, Cornwall on 4 November 1984.
