A Second World War M.M. for Italy awarded to Sepoy Charan Singh, 2nd Punjab Rifles
Military Medal, G.VI.R. (20501 Sepoy, 2 Punjab R.) very fine

M.M. London Gazette 19 July, 1945. ‘On 20 April, 1945, Sepoy Charan Singh was in command of the stretcher bearer party in B Company, during the Battle of the River Idice. The fire of the enemy was intense throughout the action and two of his stretcher bearers were badly hit. This did not deter Sepoy Charan Singh from carrying on with his work. He continually went over the crest of the river bank to bring in the wounded under heavy fire, bandage them and carry them to the rear. He then returned at the double to deal with the next casualty. The age of this man is forty years, but he performed his work with the energy of a man half his age. By his magnificent first-aid work and complete disregard for his own safety, Charan Singh undoubtedly saved his Company from losing many more of their brave men. His work was an inspiration to all ranks and contributed largely to the morale of the Company after their severe casualties.’
